Why the very first webcam pointed at a Trojan Room coffee pot
In 1991, researchers in the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge grew tired of walking to the breakroom only to find an empty coffee pot. Quentin Stafford-Fraser and Paul Jardetzky set up a camera capturing a 128-by-128 greyscale frame of the pot every few seconds, serving it to desktop monitors over their local network. In 1993, when web browsers added image support, it went live online as history's first webcam.
