The average human body temperature is no longer 98.6°F
In 1851, German physician Carl Wunderlich analyzed millions of readings and declared 98.6°F (37°C) the benchmark for normal human body temperature. But modern research shows we have steadily cooled down. A landmark Stanford study found that average resting oral temperature has dropped by about 0.05°F per decade since the 19th century, sitting closer to 97.9°F today. Widespread declines in chronic infections, lower inflammation, and climate-controlled living are the primary drivers.
The Origin of the 98.6 Standard
In the mid-nineteenth century, German physician Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich set out to transform clinical diagnosis into an objective, quantitative science. Working at the hospital of the University of Leipzig, Wunderlich collected millions of temperature readings from roughly 25,000 patients. At the time, thermometry was an arduous procedure. Early clinical thermometers were often a foot long, difficult to calibrate, and required up to twenty minutes of patient immobility to produce a steady reading, typically placed under the armpit in the axilla.
When Wunderlich consolidated his findings in his landmark 1868 medical treatise, he established 37 degrees Celsius as the standard physiological median for healthy humans. Converted to the Fahrenheit scale, that figure yields exactly 98.6 degrees. Wunderlich acknowledged that normal temperature fluctuated across a range and throughout the day, but the tidy benchmark of 37 degrees Celsius captured the medical imagination. For the next century and a half, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit became ingrained in textbooks, clinical guidelines, and household folklore as the universal definition of normal human warmth.
Uncovering a Century and a Half of Cooling
For decades, modern clinicians suspected that contemporary patients rarely matched Wunderlich's benchmark. Routine clinical readings consistently hovered closer to 98.0 or 97.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Initially, this discrepancy was dismissed as an artifact of historical instrumentation. Modern researchers assumed Wunderlich's thermometers had simply run high or that his armpit readings had introduced systematic calibration errors into his sprawling dataset.
