You have roughly as many bacterial cells as human cells
A popular scientific myth claimed that bacterial cells outnumber human cells ten to one in our bodies. Modern revised estimates show the true ratio is much closer to one to one. An average adult male has roughly 30 trillion human cells and about 38 trillion bacterial cells, mostly residing in the colon. By cell count, you are just over half microbial.
The Origin of the Ten-to-One Myth
For decades, an extraordinary statistic was repeated across scientific textbooks, research papers, and popular media: the human body was said to harbor ten bacterial cells for every single human cell. This catchy ratio suggested that humans were, biologically speaking, merely ten percent human and ninety percent microbial passenger. The claim was frequently cited to emphasize the vast importance of the human microbiome in health, digestion, and disease prevention.
The figure trace back to a rough calculation published in the early 1970s by microbiologist Thomas Luckey. Working with the limited experimental methods available at the time, Luckey estimated that a human gastrointestinal tract contained roughly one hundred trillion microbes by assuming a uniform density of bacteria throughout the entire digestive tract and multiplying it across a standard volume. Because human cell counts were casually estimated at around ten trillion, the ten-to-one ratio was born and subsequently repeated for over forty years without rigorous reassessment.
Reassessing the Real Human Cell Count
A critical reassessment of these numbers took place when researchers systematically examined the cellular inventory of a standard reference individual—defined in physiology literature as a young adult male weighing seventy kilograms and standing one hundred and seventy centimeters tall. Rather than relying on broad approximations, researchers surveyed modern measurements across different tissue types, organ masses, and cellular densities.
The revised calculations revealed that a standard human body consists of approximately thirty trillion human cells. Surprisingly, the vast majority of these cells belong to a single cell type: red blood cells, or erythrocytes. Making up roughly eighty-four percent of all human cells by number, red blood cells dominate the total count despite lacking nuclei and possessing a relatively simple internal structure. Platelets account for another four to five percent, meaning that blood cells constitute nearly ninety percent of the human cellular total by numerical count.
