A tiny reef fish became the first fish known to pass the mirror test
Scientists long believed self-recognition was exclusive to large-brained mammals like chimpanzees and dolphins. However, the tiny bluestreak cleaner wrasse became the first fish to pass the classic mirror self-recognition test. When marked with a brown gel on their throats, the fish swam to mirrors, inspected the spot, and then scraped their bodies against rocks to remove it—demonstrating an awareness of their own reflection.
The Classic Benchmark of Animal Awareness
For decades, the standard scientific tool for investigating whether non-human animals possess a concept of self has been the mirror self-recognition test. Developed in the 1970s, the protocol begins by placing an animal in front of a mirror to observe its behavioral progression. Typically, animals first react to their reflection as if encountering an unfamiliar stranger, displaying aggression, curiosity, or territorial defense. Over time, a select few species realize that the image moves in perfect sync with their own bodies, eventually using the reflective surface to examine body parts they cannot normally see.
The definitive phase of the experiment involves applying an odorless, non-irritating colored mark to a location on the animal's body that is only visible in a reflection, such as the forehead or throat. If the animal views its reflection and touches, inspects, or attempts to scrape away the mark on its own body rather than interacting with the mirror surface, scientists interpret this as evidence that the animal understands the reflection depicts itself. For nearly half a century, passing this mark test was considered a rare cognitive feat achieved only by large-brained mammals, including chimpanzees, bottlenose dolphins, and Asian elephants, alongside a single bird species, the Eurasian magpie.

The bluestreak cleaner wrasse is a small, slender coral reef fish native to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific.
