How a Victorian engineer fried the first undersea cable
In 1858, engineers successfully laid the first transatlantic telegraph cable, connecting Europe and North America. However, the connection was painfully slow, taking over sixteen hours to send a single message. In an attempt to boost the signal speed, chief engineer Wildman Whitehouse applied a massive electrical charge of 2,000 volts to the line. Instead of speeding up the data, the high voltage permanently fried the cable's delicate underwater insulation, ruining it after just three weeks.
The Dream of Instant Intercontinental Contact
In the mid-nineteenth century, communication between Europe and North America was bound by the speed of ocean steamships. A message sent from London to New York required at least ten to twelve days to cross the Atlantic, meaning that diplomacy, trade, and news operated on a latency of nearly a month for a single round trip. Following the successful deployment of shorter undersea cables across the English Channel and the Irish Sea, entrepreneurs and engineers began to contemplate a far more daring venture: laying a single uninterrupted electrical wire spanning nearly two thousand nautical miles of the North Atlantic seabed.
The project was spearheaded by American financier Cyrus West Field and his Atlantic Telegraph Company, which secured financial backing and naval assistance from both the British and United States governments. The plan required two converted naval warships, the British HMS Agamemnon and the American USS Niagara, to carry massive coils of armored wire, meet in the mid-Atlantic, splice their respective cable halves together, and steam in opposite directions—one toward Valentia Island off the western coast of Ireland, and the other toward Trinity Bay in Newfoundland.
After severe storms and broken cables aborted preliminary expeditions in 1857 and earlier in 1858, a late-summer attempt finally succeeded. On August 5, 1858, the two ends came ashore, establishing the first direct electrical link between the Old World and the New. Public jubilation was immense, celebrated with fireworks, parades, and church bells across Britain and North America. Yet beneath the ocean, a silent physical crisis was already unfolding within the core of the cable.
