The Short-Lived Triumph of the First Transatlantic Cable
In August 1858, Queen Victoria and US President James Buchanan exchanged the first transatlantic telegraph message, sparking global celebration. However, the triumph was short-lived. Due to poor insulation and a lack of technical understanding, wild attempts to boost the signal's speed by applying high voltage ruined the underwater cable. It permanently failed just three weeks after its historic completion, delaying reliable global communication for years.
The Audacious Ambition to Wire the Atlantic
In the middle of the nineteenth century, communication across the Atlantic Ocean was bound to the speed of steamships. News, diplomatic dispatches, trade orders, and personal letters required at least a week to ten days to travel between North America and Europe, and adverse weather could stretch that transit time considerably. While overland electric telegraph networks had expanded rapidly across both continents during the 1840s and early 1850s, the vast expanse of the Atlantic remained an impassable chasm for instantaneous communication.
The drive to bridge this divide gained momentum when American financier Cyrus West Field joined forces with British telegraph engineers, including Charles Tilston Bright and John Watkins Brett, to form the Atlantic Telegraph Company in 1856. Their plan was straightforward in concept but unprecedented in scale: to submerge a continuous, insulated copper wire along the ocean floor for nearly two thousand nautical miles, connecting Valentia Island off the southwest coast of Ireland to Trinity Bay in Newfoundland.
Executing the project required overcoming staggering geographic and logistical hurdles. Oceanographic surveys directed by Matthew Fontaine Maury had identified a relatively flat plateau across the North Atlantic seabed—dubbed the 'Telegraph Plateau'—which appeared ideal for resting a cable safely away from icebergs and commercial shipping. Even so, manufacturing thousands of miles of armored wire and securing naval vessels large enough to transport and lay the enormous weight posed an extraordinary industrial gamble.
