Flying Snakes Flatten Their Bodies to Glide Through the Air
Without wings or limbs, Chrysopelea snakes can leap off tall branches and glide through the rainforest canopy for dozens of meters. In midair, the snake flattens its body to twice its normal width, creating a concave C-shape that traps air beneath it like a parachute. By undulating from side to side as it falls, it controls its trajectory and lands safely on far-off trees.
Arboreal Specialists of the Asian Tropics
The genus Chrysopelea, collectively known as flying snakes or gliding snakes, represents a small group of mildly venomous species within the family Colubridae. Found across the rainforests, plantations, and woodlands of Southeast Asia, southern China, India, and Sri Lanka, these snakes spend the vast majority of their lives high in the forest canopy. While several animal groups have independently evolved gliding adaptations—including mammals like flying squirrels and reptiles like Draco flying lizards—flying snakes achieve aerial locomotion without possessing limbs, wing membranes, or dedicated fins.
Five distinct species belong to this genus: the paradise tree snake (Chrysopelea paradisi), the ornate flying snake or golden tree snake (Chrysopelea ornata), the twin-barred tree snake (Chrysopelea pelias), the Moluccan flying snake (Chrysopelea rhodopleuron), and the Sri Lankan flying snake (Chrysopelea taprobanica). These snakes are diurnal predators, actively hunting small vertebrates during daylight hours. Their diet consists primarily of lizards, frogs, small birds, bats, and rodents, which they immobilize using mildly toxic venom delivered by rear fangs, a venom system harmless to humans.
The Mechanics of the Leap
Gliding begins with an active, carefully coordinated launch from high foliage or branches. To initiate a jump, a flying snake typically crawls toward the tip of an elevated branch and forms the front portion of its body into an anchor shape, frequently resembling a tight J-shaped or S-shaped loop. By quickly straightening its coiled muscular body and pushing off the substrate, the snake propels itself outward and downward into open space.
