The common swift (*Apus apus*) spends the vast majority of its life in perpetual motion, suspended between the clouds and the ground. While many migratory birds take to the air for long voyages, the swift takes aerial living to an extreme unmatched by almost any other creature. Outside of the brief summer breeding season, these birds leave the ground entirely, embarking on a continuous flight that lasts up to ten months. They traverse continents, cross deserts, and weather severe storms without once setting their feet on a branch, a roof, or the earth.
This extraordinary endurance means that all primary life functions must occur mid-flight. Common swifts gather their food, quench their thirst, collect nesting material, mate, and even sleep while cruising through the atmosphere. For centuries, naturalists suspected that swifts spent unusually long stretches aloft, observing that they rarely perched in trees like songbirds. Modern tracking technology has confirmed that many individuals do not land a single time during their entire non-breeding migration to sub-Saharan Africa and back.
Proving the Ten-Month Aerial Marathon
For decades, the idea that a bird could remain airborne for nearly a year was primarily a hypothesis supported by indirect observations. Swifts were seen ascending to high altitudes at dusk and vanishing into the night sky, only to reappear at dawn. However, researchers lacked the continuous tracking tools necessary to prove whether the birds were roosting in remote forest canopies or remaining suspended in the night air.
The definitive breakthrough came with the development of miniature data-logging devices equipped with light-level sensors and accelerometers. Fitted to swifts at their breeding grounds, these tiny backpacks recorded the birds' movement and activity levels every few minutes across their entire migration. When the loggers were retrieved in subsequent years, the data revealed that several birds remained in active flight or glide for over 300 consecutive days.
