Lobsters Grind Their Food With Teeth Located Inside Their Stomachs
Lobsters do not have teeth in their mouths. Instead, they swallow food whole or in large chunks, which then enters a specialized stomach chamber called the gastric mill. This area contains three hard, calcified structures that function as teeth, mashing and grinding the food internally. When lobsters shed their exoskeleton as they grow, they even shed the lining of these stomach teeth.
An Upside-Down Approach to Chewing
In the vast majority of familiar vertebrate animals, digestion follows a predictable physical sequence. Food enters the mouth, where teeth slice, puncture, or grind it into smaller fragments before it travels down the esophagus to be broken down chemically in the stomach. Decapod crustaceans, a group that includes lobsters, crabs, and crayfish, have adopted an entirely different mechanical approach. Their mouthparts are designed to grasp, hold, and pull food apart into coarse chunks, but they lack teeth capable of thorough chewing at the oral cavity.
Instead of reducing prey to a pulp before swallowing, lobsters ingest these large, unground pieces whole. The mechanical work that mammals perform in their mouths takes place entirely inside the lobster's digestive tract. To accomplish this, the anterior chamber of the digestive system contains an internal chewing apparatus known as the gastric mill, a specialized structure that functions effectively as an internal set of jaws.
This arrangement allows lobsters to consume a wide variety of tough marine organisms, including mollusks, smaller crustaceans, and coarse plant matter, without needing heavy jaw bones or external dental structures that could be vulnerable to wear and damage in the aquatic environment.
The Anatomy of Internal Teeth
The gastric mill is located in the cardiac stomach, which is the large, anterior chamber of the lobster's two-part stomach system. Situated just behind the mouthparts and esophagus, this chamber acts as both a receiving reservoir and a primary processing center. The gastric mill itself is made up of a complex assembly of calcified, hard plates and projections termed ossicles, which are embedded directly into the stomach wall.
