Bubble Wrap was originally invented to be trendy textured wallpaper
In 1957, engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes tried to create a futuristic textured wallpaper by sealing two plastic shower curtains together with trapped air bubbles. The wallpaper flopped, as did a later pivot attempting to market the material as greenhouse insulation. Its salvation arrived three years later when Sealed Air pitched it to IBM, who adopted the bubbly sheets as protective packaging for their delicate 1401 mainframe computers.
