The Python programming language was named after British sketch comedy
When Dutch programmer Guido van Rossum began designing a new scripting language in December 1989, he wanted a name that was short, unique, and slightly irreverent. Being an avid fan of the surreal British comedy troupe Monty Python, he named the project after their BBC television series, "Monty Python's Flying Circus." Early Python documentation and tutorials even leaned into the joke, featuring spam, cheese shops, and dead parrots as standard code examples.
