The first cyberweapon designed to physically destroy industrial hardware
In 2010, cybersecurity researchers uncovered Stuxnet, a remarkably sophisticated computer worm engineered to sabotage Iran's uranium enrichment facility at Natanz. Unlike ordinary malware that steals data or encrypts files, Stuxnet targeted programmable logic controllers that governed uranium centrifuges. It silently forced the centrifuges to spin dangerously fast and slow, tearing them apart mechanically, all while feeding normal telemetry to monitoring screens so operators never noticed until the machines failed.
