Uranus was originally named after King George III
When British astronomer William Herschel discovered the seventh planet in 1781, he named it "Georgium Sidus" (George's Star) in honor of his patron, King George III. While British astronomers happily used the patriotic name for decades, international astronomers firmly refused to adopt a British monarch's name. German astronomer Johann Elert Bode proposed Uranus to align with ancient Greco-Roman mythology. It took nearly seventy years before Herschel's original royal moniker was completely abandoned.
An Unexpected Sighting in a Bath Garden
On the evening of March 13, 1781, German-born British astronomer William Herschel aimed a custom-built seven-foot reflecting telescope into the night sky from the garden of his home in Bath, England. Herschel was engaged in an ambitious survey of stars, attempting to observe double stars to measure stellar parallax. While scanning the constellation Gemini, he noted an object that appeared distinctly different from a typical point-like star. Instead of a sharp pinpoint of light, it presented a faint, disc-like appearance that expanded under higher magnifications, suggesting it was much closer to Earth than the background stars.
Herschel initially suspected he had found a previously unrecorded comet. Telescopic observers of the era frequently tracked comets, which often appeared as nebulous or disc-like patches before developing noticeable tails. On April 26, 1781, Herschel formally announced the discovery to the Royal Society as a 'comet or nebulous star.' However, as mathematicians and astronomers across Europe tracked its slow, remarkably circular trajectory over the following months, they realized the object lacked the eccentric orbit typical of comets. The Russian-based mathematician Anders Johan Lexell and French observers computed that it orbited far beyond Saturn, making it the first planet discovered since antiquity.
Earlier astronomers had cataloged the object numerous times without realizing its nature. As far back as 1690, the first British Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, had observed it and recorded it as the star 34 Tauri. The French astronomer Pierre Charles Le Monnier observed it more than a dozen times in the mid-eighteenth century. Because its orbital period lasts roughly eighty-four Earth years, its motion across the sky against the celestial background was so sluggish that earlier observers regularly mistook it for an ordinary, fixed star.
