Spinoza applied a ruthless version of the principle to metaphysics, arguing that if every fact must have an explanation, then whatever is possible must necessarily exist, and nothing could possibly be other than it is. In Spinoza’s philosophy, all things follow from the nature of the single divine substance with geometric inevitability. Contingency and alternative possibilities disappear entirely, reducing human freedom and choice to mere illusions born of ignorance regarding underlying causes.
Leibniz was deeply unsettled by Spinoza’s fatalistic conclusions and spent decades attempting to protect contingency and moral responsibility without surrendering the principle.
