The Balinese Dance Accompanied by a 100-Man Human Orchestra
Unlike most traditional Indonesian performing arts, the Balinese Kecak dance uses no gamelan gongs or flutes. Instead, the musical score is created entirely by a chorus of dozens—sometimes more than a hundred—seated men. Chanting rapid, interlocking vocal patterns of "cak-cak-cak" while raising and swaying their arms, the performers recreate the battle of the Hindu epic Ramayana, turning their collective voices into a polyrhythmic percussion ensemble without a single instrument.
The Architecture of Human Percussion
In the vast landscape of Indonesian performing arts, the metallic resonance of the gamelan orchestra usually reigns supreme. Bronze gongs, tuned metallophones, drums, and bamboo flutes create the sonic environment for almost every Balinese theatrical form. The Kecak dance departs dramatically from this convention. It dispenses entirely with musical instruments, relying instead on the unassisted human voice to generate a dense, polyrhythmic soundscape that serves as both accompaniment and dramatic narration.
The chorus is formed by a group of men—ranging from several dozen to well over a hundred—seated in concentric circles around a central performance space. Stripped to the waist and dressed in black-and-white checkered cloths known as kain poleng, the performers use their vocal cords to mimic the complex architecture of a gamelan ensemble. Individual sections of the choir take on distinct musical roles, from steady bass tones that mark the underlying tempo to rapid, staccato syllables that replicate the piercing strikes of smaller bronze keys.
The signature sound is the rapid, syncopated repetition of the syllable 'cak' (pronounced roughly as 'chak'). Rather than chanting in simple unison, the men weave their vocal lines together through an interlocking rhythmic technique called kotekan. In kotekan, performers split into alternating sub-groups, each singing rapid offbeat patterns that fit precisely into the gaps of another group's rhythm. When these interlocking voices overlap, they create a continuous, galloping acoustic fabric that sounds far faster and more intricate than any single human voice could produce alone.
