Jupiter's moon Callisto is the most cratered world known
Jupiter's outermost Galilean moon, Callisto, is a frozen relic preserved in time. Unlike worlds shaped by volcanoes, tectonic shifts, or weather, Callisto has had virtually no geological activity to erase its scars for billions of years. Its icy, ancient crust has absorbed meteorite strikes continuously since the birth of the solar system, making it the most heavily cratered object ever discovered. Every new crater on Callisto now almost inevitably overlaps an existing one.
A Surface Frozen in Deep Time
Callisto was discovered in January 1610 by Galileo Galilei, alongside Jupiter's three other large satellites: Io, Europa, and Ganymede. Roughly the size of the planet Mercury, Callisto is the third-largest natural satellite in the solar system, bested only by Ganymede and Saturn's moon Titan. Yet while its siblings underwent dramatic evolutions, Callisto remained frozen in deep time. Composed in nearly equal parts of water ice and rocky material, it has preserved a record of cosmic bombardment that stretches back nearly four and a half billion years to the early formation of the planetary system.
That preserved history makes Callisto the most heavily cratered object known to planetary science. Over billions of years, meteorites and comets struck its icy surface without any persistent geological forces to erase the aftermath. Today, Callisto has reached a state that planetary geologists refer to as impact crater saturation. Across its surface, the ground is so dense with impact marks that new impacts can almost never create a fresh crater without simultaneously obliterating or overlapping one or more older ones. The landscape is an unbroken tapestry of overlapping circular rims, central peaks, and ejected debris blankets.
Because Callisto lacks wind, rain, active volcanism, or flowing rivers, its surface suffers no terrestrial-style erosion. Even the Moon and Mercury, which are also dominated by impact scars, display extensive volcanic plains—such as the lunar maria—that flooded and smoothed out huge swaths of ancient topography. Callisto never experienced widespread volcanic flooding on that scale. As a result, looking at Callisto is equivalent to peering directly into the early solar system's violent era of heavy planetary bombardment.
