Philosopher Bernard Williams asked what happens when a traveler named Jim must choose: shoot one innocent captive to save nineteen others, or refuse and watch a warlord execute all twenty. Standard utilitarianism claims Jim has an obvious moral duty to shoot. Williams countered that this ignores personal integrity—the idea that our deepest moral commitments cannot simply become pawns dictated by another person's evil project.
The Principle of Maximizing Well-Being
Utilitarian ethics is grounded in a clear and demanding premise: the moral quality of an action depends entirely on its consequences. The primary objective is to produce the greatest amount of aggregate well-being and minimize total suffering across all affected individuals. Under this model, moral agents are required to adopt an impartial perspective, giving equal weight to every person's life, pain, and flourishing regardless of personal relationships or geographical distance.
From this standpoint, ethical decision-making operates like a rigorous assessment of net outcomes. When faced with difficult circumstances, an agent must evaluate every available course of action, project the likely results, and select the path that secures the highest net benefit. If one choice leads to a state of affairs containing significantly less death, grief, and suffering than all alternatives, that choice represents the correct moral course of action.
Jim and the Twenty Captives
In 1973, philosopher Bernard Williams published a famous critique of utilitarianism in a co-authored volume with J.J.C. Smart. To illustrate what he saw as a fundamental flaw in consequentialist reasoning, Williams introduced a thought experiment involving an ordinary traveler named Jim. Jim finds himself in the central square of a small South American town, where an officer named Pedro is preparing to execute twenty indigenous captives who had engaged in a peaceful protest.
Because Jim is an honored foreign visitor, Pedro presents him with an extraordinary offer: if Jim chooses to shoot one of the captives himself, Pedro will spare the remaining nineteen as an act of goodwill. If Jim refuses the offer, Pedro and his soldiers will immediately execute all twenty captives. In pure outcome-oriented terms, the arithmetic appears straightforward: Jim choosing to shoot one person results in nineteen lives saved and one lost, whereas Jim refusing results in twenty deaths.
