Why Korean speakers must learn two different ways to count to three
Korean uses two separate numeral systems. To count to three using native Korean numbers, you say 하나 (hana, HAH-nah), 둘 (dul, dool), and 셋 (set, set). These native words are reserved for counting people, objects, and hours. However, for minutes, money, phone numbers, and math, Korean switches entirely to Sino-Korean numbers derived from Chinese characters: 일 (il, eel), 이 (i, ee), and 삼 (sam, sahm).
A Dual System in Daily Speech
Korean presents learners and speakers with an unusual feature: every quantitative statement requires choosing between two entirely distinct sets of numerals. Counting to three using indigenous Korean words yields 하나 (hana), 둘 (dul), and 셋 (set). Counting to three using Sino-Korean words yields 일 (il), 이 (i), and 삼 (sam). These are not merely stylistic synonyms or interchangeable registers; they are distinct lexical systems that govern separate functional areas of the language.
A speaker cannot simply pick one system and use it exclusively across all contexts. Saying three people using Sino-Korean numerals sounds ungrammatical, while calculating mathematical equations or stating phone numbers using native Korean numerals is equally nonstandard. The choice of which number system to deploy is tied directly to the semantic category of the thing being counted, the presence of specific measure words (classifiers), and whether the figure represents an abstract mathematical unit or an identifiable physical quantity.
The Historical Influence of Classical Chinese
The coexistence of two counting systems is the product of sustained historical and cultural contact between the Korean peninsula and China over thousands of years. Before the creation of Hangul in the fifteenth century, Korean was recorded using Classical Chinese characters (Hanja). Chinese served as the language of formal administration, literature, scholarship, astronomy, and statecraft. Along with Chinese philosophical and bureaucratic texts came the Chinese base-ten decimal numeral system.
