Why there is no single feature that defines what a "game" is
Traditional philosophers believed defining any concept required finding essential features shared by every example. Ludwig Wittgenstein dismantled this in 1953 using the concept of a "game." Chess, poker, football, and solitary ring-toss share overlapping traits—like competition, rules, or fun—yet no single feature belongs to all of them. Instead, concepts are held together by what Wittgenstein called "family resemblance": a network of overlapping similarities, much like shared facial traits in a family.
The Ancient Urge to Define Everything
For much of Western philosophical history, understanding a concept meant discovering its universal essence. From the dialogues of Plato onward, philosophers sought the set of necessary and sufficient conditions that cleanly separates one category from another. To know what justice, piety, knowledge, or art truly was, one had to identify the single, common thread running through every legitimate instance of the idea. Without such a definition, traditional thought often assumed that a concept was defective, vague, or insufficiently understood.
This traditional framework presumed that human language mirrors an orderly, underlying logical architecture. If a single word applies to a variety of distinct objects or activities, there must be an essential property they all share. Ludwig Wittgenstein himself subscribed to a version of this rigorous logical demand in his early work, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. In that early period, he argued that language derives its meaning from representing states of affairs through a strictly logical structure, where propositions function as precise pictures of reality.
The Turn to Everyday Practice
In his later work, culminating in the posthumously published Philosophical Investigations, Wittgenstein broke decisively with his earlier views and with the essentialist tradition. Rather than imposing an idealized logical framework onto human speech from above, he urged philosophers to step back and observe how language actually functions in daily life. He famously instructed his readers not to think about what must be true in theory, but to look and see how words are actually employed.
