Point Nemo, the oceanic pole of inaccessibility in the South Pacific, is the furthest point on Earth from any landmass—over 2,680 kilometers from shore. Because it is surrounded by thousands of miles of uninhabited ocean, space agencies use it as a target for controlled deorbits. More than 260 spacecraft, including the Russian Mir space station and spent cargo ships, lie submerged in this aquatic graveyard.
The Geometry of Isolation
Point Nemo represents the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, defined mathematically as the spot in the ocean farthest from any dry land. Located in the southern Pacific Ocean at approximately 48 degrees 52.6 minutes south latitude and 123 degrees 23.6 minutes west longitude, this coordinate is roughly 2,688 kilometers—nearly 1,670 miles—away from the nearest shores. The point is not marked by an island, buoy, or visible geographical feature; it is simply a coordinate surrounded by millions of square kilometers of open water.
The boundaries that define Point Nemo are formed by three equidistant, uninhabited or sparsely inhabited landmasses. To the north lies Ducie Island, a low-lying coral atoll part of the Pitcairn Islands territory. To the northeast sits Motu Nui, a small islet situated just off the coast of Easter Island. To the south rests Maher Island, a frozen outcrop off the coast of Marie Byrd Land in Antarctica. Because the Earth is an irregular sphere, identifying a point precisely equidistant from three distinct coastlines required sophisticated geodesic modeling.
Discovery and the Meaning of 'No One'
Unlike traditional geographical landmarks discovered during historic naval expeditions, Point Nemo was identified computationally. In 1992, Croatian-Canadian survey engineer Hrvoje Lukatela calculated the location using specialized geospatial software. Lukatela recognized that determining the true oceanic pole of inaccessibility required calculating the maximum radius of a circle that could touch three coastlines without encompassing any land inside its perimeter. Digital mapping allowed him to pinpoint the coordinate with high spatial accuracy.
