How negative stereotypes can sabotage test scores
Reminding students of a negative stereotype about their group right before an exam can significantly depress their performance. Known as stereotype threat, this phenomenon occurs because the fear of confirming a negative belief consumes valuable working memory and increases physiological anxiety. Research shows that simply reframing a test as a non-evaluative challenge or acknowledging this bias can neutralize the effect and restore natural performance levels.
The Discovery of a Situational Trap
In the mid-1990s, social psychologists Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson set out to examine why standard measures of academic performance often showed unexplained gaps between different demographic groups. They hypothesized that the social context surrounding an evaluation could itself influence how people performed. In their foundational experiments, Black and White college students were given difficult verbal test questions taken from the Graduate Record Examination. The researchers varied only how the test was described to the participants.
When the researchers presented the test as a diagnostic assessment of genuine intellectual ability, Black participants scored significantly lower than their White peers, even after controlling for prior standardized test performance. However, when the exact same set of questions was framed as a non-evaluative problem-solving task with no bearing on inherent ability, the performance gap diminished dramatically. This demonstrated that the disparity was not driven by differences in preparation or underlying skill, but by a situational predicament that the researchers termed stereotype threat.
Stereotype threat refers to the risk of confirming, as a self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one's social group. When people are in a situation where a negative belief about their group is relevant, the awareness that their performance could be judged through that lens introduces an extra psychological burden. Subsequent research quickly expanded beyond racial comparisons to examine how similar dynamics affect women in advanced mathematics, older adults in memory tasks, and individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds in academic settings.
