African lungfish can survive out of water for years inside a slime cocoon
When seasonal African waterways dry up, the West African lungfish burrows into the mud and excretes a mucus sheath that hardens into an airtight cocoon. By drastically slowing its metabolic rate and breathing air through a primitive lung, the fish can estivate without food or water for several years. When heavy seasonal rains finally dissolve the hardened mud capsule, the lungfish rehydrates and swims away unaffected.
Anatomy of an Air-Breathing Survivor
The West African lungfish, Protopterus annectens, occupies a distinctive place in vertebrate biology. Belonging to the ancient class of lobe-finned fishes known as Sarcopterygii, it possesses an elongated, eel-like body covered in smooth, embedded cycloid scales. Unlike typical teleost fish that rely primarily on rayed fins, the lungfish features slender, filamentous pectoral and pelvic fins that resemble thin appendages. These modified fins are highly flexible and packed with sensory structures, allowing the fish to navigate dense underwater vegetation and crawl across muddy substrate in murky African floodplains.
The most defining anatomical feature of Protopterus annectens is its specialized respiratory system. While young lungfish possess external gills reminiscent of amphibian larvae, mature adults experience significant gill reduction. Instead of extracting sufficient oxygen from the water column, adult lungfish rely almost entirely on paired, highly vascularized lungs connected directly to the gut. These organs are true lungs rather than simple modified swim bladders, functioning via pulmonary circulation that mirrors early terrestrial vertebrates. Because their gills are insufficient to sustain them, adult West African lungfish are obligate air breathers and will drown if prevented from surfacing regularly to inhale atmospheric air.
Complementing its respiratory specialization is a powerful feeding apparatus. The species lacks standard individual teeth, possessing instead heavy, sharp tooth plates fused to the jawbones. These specialized plates act as crushing shears, allowing the fish to consume a wide range of prey items including hard-shelled mollusks, freshwater crabs, small fish, and submerged plant matter. Combined with small, recessed eyes suited for low-visibility waterways, the fish relies heavily on tactile and chemical cues to hunt along the riverbeds of West and Central Africa.
