A sudden sensation of rectal pressure or the urge to defecate shortly after finishing a meal is a widespread human experience. The gastrocolic reflex begins the moment food enters the stomach and begins to stretch the gastric walls. Mechanoreceptors embedded throughout the smooth muscle of the stomach detect this physical distension. These sensory receptors instantly transmit electrical impulses along intrinsic and extrinsic neural pathways, setting off a chain reaction through the gut's vast nervous network.
On an extrinsic level, the autonomic nervous system plays a primary role, largely mediated by the vagus nerve and parasympathetic pathways.
