The ancient Greek computer that predicted eclipses
Discovered in a shipwreck in 1901, the Antikythera mechanism is an ancient Greek hand-wound analogue computer dating back to the second century BC. It used a complex system of over thirty bronze gears to track astronomical positions, eclipses, and even the four-year cycle of the ancient Olympic Games, displaying technology that wouldn't reappear in Europe for over a millennium.
A Bronze Relic from the Aegean Sea
In the spring of 1900, a crew of Greek sponge divers sheltering from a storm anchored near the small island of Antikythera, located between Crete and the Peloponnese. Diving into the deep waters off Point Glyphadia, they came upon the remains of an ancient Roman-era shipwreck lying roughly forty-five meters below the surface. Over the following months, salvage operations brought up marble statues, bronze sculptures, glassware, and pottery dating to the first century BC. Among the treasures was an encrusted, corroded lump of bronze and wood that initially drew little notice compared to the magnificent artworks.
In May 1902, archaeologist Valerios Stais examined the crumbling artifact at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. He noticed that the corrosion had split open, exposing the distinct tooth outline of a gear wheel embedded in the calcified rock. The discovery sparked immediate skepticism among historians. At the time, prevailing academic consensus held that complex geared machinery had not been developed until the late Middle Ages or the early Renaissance. Many early commentators believed the object must have been a modern navigational instrument, such as an astrolabe dropped onto the ancient wreck centuries later.
Decades of physical analysis, chemical cleaning, and radiographic examination proved otherwise. The metal was ancient bronze, the inscriptions matched the Hellenistic Greek script of the late second or early first century BC, and the timber framing belonged to the original wreck assemblage. The heavily fractured relic—now preserved in eighty-two separate fragments, labeled A through G along with dozens of tiny shards—represented something unprecedented: a sophisticated mechanical computer built over two thousand years ago.
