Tetris Was Coded on a Soviet Computer Without Graphics
In 1984, Soviet researcher Alexey Pajitnov programmed the first version of Tetris on an Electronika 60 at the Moscow Academy of Sciences. An Experiment in Moscow
In the spring of 1984, Alexey Pajitnov was working as a computer programmer at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union in Moscow. His day-to-day research focused on speech recognition and artificial intelligence, tasks that involved evaluating new computer hardware by writing software to push the machines' operational limits. To test system capabilities and explore his personal interest in puzzles, Pajitnov frequently wrote small game programs in his spare time on the laboratory's equipment.
Pajitnov drew inspiration from classic tabletop puzzles, particularly pentominoes, a game where players arrange geometric tiles formed from five equal squares into specific wooden grids. He envisioned turning pentominoes into a dynamic, real-time computer puzzle where shapes would drop from the top of the screen into a narrow rectangular well. However, during early conceptual planning, he realized that pentominoes—which feature twelve distinct shapes—were too complex for fast-paced play. He simplified the design by reducing the number of squares in each shape from five to four, creating seven distinct geometric pieces known mathematically as tetrominoes.
Simulating Graphics on Text-Only Hardware
The computer Pajitnov used to build the original prototype was an Electronika 60, a Soviet-manufactured rack-mounted microcomputer based on the DEC PDP-11 architecture. The Electronika 60 had no dedicated graphics card, no frame buffer, and no ability to draw pixel-level bitmaps on its connected alphanumeric terminal. The screen was capable of displaying only standard text characters in a fixed monochrome grid, which made traditional video game animation seemingly impossible.
To circumvent these severe hardware limitations, Pajitnov turned to plain text characters to construct the game's visuals. He used pairs of typographical brackets, printing two characters side by side—"[]"—to represent a single square block within the terminal's character matrix. A full four-block tetromino was therefore rendered as an arrangement of eight bracket characters. When a piece moved or rotated, Pajitnov's code erased the old characters and printed new ones at the target coordinates, effectively simulating raster graphics on a text-only monitor.
The prototype was completed on June 6, 1984. Pajitnov named the game Tetris, combining the Greek numerical prefix "tetra-" (meaning four) with "tennis," his favorite sport. Even in its rudimentary text format, the game's core mechanic—clearing filled horizontal rows to prevent the playing field from overflowing—proved instantly compelling to Pajitnov and his colleagues at the academy.
The IBM PC Port and Early Spread
While the text-based version on the Electronika 60 proved the concept, the machine was rare and confined to academic and government facilities. Pajitnov wanted to bring the game to the IBM Personal Computer, which was rapidly becoming popular and supported color displays. Because he was unfamiliar with programming for MS-DOS, Pajitnov enlisted the help of Vadim Gerasimov, a 16-year-old high school student who had gained access to the Computing Centre through an extracurricular computer science program.
Gerasimov ported Pajitnov's original Pascal code to MS-DOS, replacing the simple text bracket characters with solid, colorful graphic blocks using the IBM PC's character ROM and display modes. He also added sound effects, a scoring system, and a persistent leaderboard to track high scores. This PC version transformed Tetris from an internal laboratory experiment into an easily distributable program that could run on standard personal computers across the Soviet Union.
The game was not sold commercially at first, as private software commerce did not exist under Soviet law at the time. Instead, researchers and students copied the game files onto 5.25-inch floppy disks and passed them from hand to hand. Within months, copies of Tetris had spread organically across research institutes in Moscow and throughout the Eastern Bloc, eventually reaching Hungary.
Crossing the Iron Curtain
In Hungary, programmers at the Institute of Computer Science in Budapest ported Tetris to other popular home computers, including the Commodore 64 and the Apple II. It was there that Robert Stein, an agent for the British software company Andromeda, discovered the game in 1986. Recognizing its commercial potential, Stein attempted to secure the worldwide rights by contacting Pajitnov and the Computing Centre via telex, mistakenly believing he had secured an agreement before contracts were formally signed.
Stein subsequently sublicensed the rights to Western publishers, leading to the commercial release of Tetris in Europe and North America by companies such as Mirrorsoft and Spectrum HoloByte. However, because Pajitnov had created the software as an employee of the Soviet state, the commercial rights legally belonged to the Soviet government. To manage the licensing and address the unauthorized Western releases, the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Trade established a dedicated state organization called Elektronorgtechnica, commonly known as ELORG.
The resulting legal knot triggered high-stakes negotiations in Moscow. In 1989, video game designer Henk Rogers traveled to the Soviet Union on behalf of Nintendo to negotiate directly with ELORG. Rogers successfully secured the handheld video game rights, which allowed Nintendo to bundle Tetris with its newly launched Game Boy portable console. The handheld version sold tens of millions of copies worldwide, cementing Tetris as a global cultural phenomenon.
How Constraints Defined the Game
The technical limitations of the Electronika 60 directly shaped Tetris into one of the most enduring game designs in history. Because Pajitnov could not rely on visual spectacle, detailed sprites, or cinematic animation, the entire experience had to succeed purely on the elegance and balance of its abstract rules. The ten-by-twenty grid and the instant feedback of clearing lines arose from the practical constraints of fitting a playable area onto a standard character-mode terminal screen.
Despite creating one of the most successful video games in history, Pajitnov did not receive royalties from the initial commercial boom because the Soviet state retained ownership of the intellectual property. It was not until 1996, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the expiration of earlier state agreements, that Pajitnov and Henk Rogers formed The Tetris Company, finally allowing Pajitnov to regain the rights and receive royalties for his creation.
Tetris demonstrates how severe hardware scarcity can catalyze software innovation. By treating a primitive text terminal as a dynamic spatial grid, Pajitnov bypassed the visual limits of his era, proving that compelling interactive design relies fundamentally on mathematics, rule structure, and cognitive engagement rather than high-end graphical processing.
