The Moon has a giant, invisible glowing tail
Earth is not the only celestial body with a tail; the Moon has one too. Solar winds and meteor bombardment constantly blast sodium atoms off the lunar surface, creating a faint, glowing tail of sodium gas that stretches hundreds of thousands of miles into space. Once a month, when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, this tail wraps around Earth's atmosphere, though it is only visible with sensitive cameras.
A Hidden Stream Behind the Moon
Comets are famous for the glowing tails of dust and gas they trail through the inner solar system, but they are not the only rocky bodies with tails. The Moon possesses an enormous, diffuse tail composed of neutral sodium atoms. This plume streams out from the lunar surface, extending across hundreds of thousands of kilometers of space directly away from the Sun.
Unlike the dramatic vapor trails of active comets, the lunar sodium tail is completely invisible to the naked eye. The atoms are spread extremely thinly across space, creating a structure that can only be detected using specialized optical instruments. When imaged with narrow-band filters tuned to the specific wavelength of sodium light, the Moon reveals a vast, comet-like appendage trailing through interplanetary space.
How the Tail Is Created
The Moon has virtually no atmosphere to protect its surface from the harsh space environment. Because of this, the lunar regolith is constantly exposed to incoming particles from the solar wind, ultraviolet photons from the Sun, and a steady rain of micrometeoroids. These energetic processes bombard the surface rocks and soil, knocking loose embedded elements in a process known as sputtering and impact vaporization.
Sodium is one of several volatile elements released during these surface interactions. Once dislodged from the lunar dirt, neutral sodium atoms enter the tenuous lunar exosphere. Photons from sunlight then exert a subtle physical push on these loose atoms through radiation pressure. This steady force accelerates the sodium away from the Sun, organizing the liberated gas into an elongated stream that points directly opposite the solar direction.
