When to expect the next visit of Halley's Comet
Halley's Comet is the only active comet that is regularly visible to the naked eye from Earth twice in a single human lifetime. It orbits the Sun approximately every 75 to 76 years. Its last close approach was in 1986, and astronomers estimate it will return to our skies in mid-2061.
The Clockwork Orbit of 1P/Halley
Halley's Comet, officially designated 1P/Halley, follows a highly elongated elliptical path that carries it from the inner Solar System out past the orbit of Neptune. Its orbital period averages between 75 and 76 years, though gravitational tugs from the giant planets—primarily Jupiter and Saturn—alter the exact duration between returns. At its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion, the comet sweeps within approximately 0.59 astronomical units of the Sun, inside the orbit of Venus. At its most distant point, or aphelion, it ventures roughly 35 astronomical units away, far beyond the orbit of Neptune.
Halley moves in a retrograde orbit, traveling around the Sun in the opposite direction to the major planets, and tilted at an inclination of about 18 degrees to the plane of the ecliptic. In late 2023, the comet reached aphelion and began its long gravitational fall back toward the inner Solar System. Astronomers calculate that its next perihelion passage will occur on July 28, 2061, bringing it back into prime naked-eye visibility from Earth.
Edmond Halley and the Discovery of Periodicity
Until the early eighteenth century, comets were widely believed to be atmospheric disturbances or transient celestial bodies passing through the Solar System on one-way trajectories. English astronomer Edmond Halley challenged this view by applying Isaac Newton's newly formulated laws of universal gravitation. Halley surveyed historical records of cometary appearances, focusing on the paths of comets observed in 1531 by Petrus Apianus, in 1607 by Johannes Kepler, and in 1682 by Halley himself.
Noticing that the orbital characteristics of these three apparitions were nearly identical, Halley deduced that they represented a single body returning at regular intervals. In his 1705 publication, 'Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets', he predicted that the comet would return in late 1758 or early 1759. Halley died in 1742 without living to see his hypothesis tested, but on Christmas Day in 1758, German amateur astronomer Johann Georg Palitzsch sighted the comet through a telescope. The successful recovery proved that comets are bound members of the Solar System operating under gravitational mechanics, and the object was subsequently named in Halley's honor.
