The echo of the Big Bang you can see on old TVs
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is the oldest light in the universe, dating back to 380,000 years after the Big Bang. As the universe expanded, this light stretched into the microwave spectrum. If you tune an old analog television to an empty channel, about one percent of the static you see is this cosmic background radiation.
The Glow in the Static
Before digital broadcasting replaced analog transmissions, tuning a television set to an empty channel produced a screen filled with flickering black-and-white static and a rushing hiss of white noise. Most of that disturbance came from thermal fluctuations inside the television circuitry itself, alongside nearby atmospheric disturbances and stray terrestrial radio emissions. However, a small fraction of the static—estimated at roughly one percent—had a far older origin. It was the direct physical impact of photons traveling through space since the infancy of the cosmos, colliding with the receiver antenna.
This pervasive signal is the Cosmic Microwave Background, or CMB. It fills the entirety of observable space and bathes the universe in a nearly uniform bath of low-energy electromagnetic radiation. While invisible to the human eye, it represents the earliest electromagnetic signal that can be directly observed. Understanding why this radiation exists, why it fills the sky, and how it reached microwave frequencies requires looking back to the physical state of the universe shortly after the Big Bang.
When the Universe Turned Transparent
In the earliest stages of the universe, space was extremely hot, dense, and energetic. Matter did not exist as neutral atoms; instead, the universe was filled with an opaque, ionized plasma composed primarily of free electrons, protons, and energetic photons. Because free electrons interact strongly with photons through a process known as Thomson scattering, any photon emitted during this era could travel only a minuscule distance before colliding with an electron and scattering in a random direction. As a result, the entire early cosmos was an impenetrable, luminous fog.
