The mere-exposure effect shows that people develop a natural preference for things simply because they are familiar with them. In sales, consistent, non-intrusive contact—such as sharing useful articles or commenting on updates—builds familiarity over time. When buyers are ready to purchase, they naturally prefer the rep whose name and brand feel safest and most familiar.
The Experimental Origins of the Mere-Exposure Effect
In the late 1960s, social psychologist Robert Zajonc published a series of experiments demonstrating a fundamental quirk of human cognition: simply presenting a stimulus repeatedly increases an individual's positive attitude toward it. In his classic studies, Zajonc exposed participants to unfamiliar stimuli, such as nonsense words, geometric figures, and Chinese-like ideographs. The frequency of exposure varied systematically, ranging from a single viewing to dozens of repetitions across brief sessions.
When participants were subsequently asked to evaluate the meaning or aesthetic appeal of these symbols, a clear pattern emerged. Even though the subjects had no prior knowledge of what the symbols represented and could not assign objective value to them, they consistently rated frequently viewed items as having more favorable meanings and greater visual appeal. The mere act of exposure, stripped of any accompanying reward, context, or persuasive argument, was sufficient to generate preference.
Early Roots and the Evolutionary Function of Safety
While Zajonc formalized the empirical framework in the twentieth century, observations of the phenomenon appeared much earlier in psychological literature. Gustav Fechner explored early notions of familiarity and aesthetics in the late nineteenth century, and psychologist Edward Titchener later noted that familiar objects often elicit an immediate, affective sensation that he described as a warm glow of recognition. These early psychologists recognized that familiarity alters human perception prior to analytical deliberation.
From an evolutionary perspective, the mere-exposure effect serves an adaptive survival function. Novel organisms and unfamiliar stimuli inherently carry risk, naturally eliciting caution, vigilance, or avoidance. When an organism encounters a stimulus repeatedly without experiencing harm or negative consequences, the nervous system registers that the stimulus is benign. Over time, the reduction in perceived threat transforms initial wariness into safety, establishing a default positive valence toward the known environment.
