The hidden number that quietly controls your decisions
If you see a jacket priced at $500, but marked down to $100, it feels like an incredible steal. However, if you saw the same jacket priced regularly at $100, you might hesitate. This is the anchoring bias. Our brains rely far too heavily on the very first piece of information we receive when making a decision, setting a mental baseline that distorts all future math.
How Initial Numbers Frame Judgment
Human judgment rarely operates in a vacuum. When estimating an unfamiliar quantity, evaluating a financial offer, or assessing probability, the mind looks for reference points to structure its thinking. The anchoring effect describes a robust cognitive bias wherein an individual relies disproportionately on the initial piece of information received—known as the anchor—when making subsequent estimates or decisions. Once an anchor is introduced, all subsequent thoughts, counter-arguments, and numeric adjustments are pulled toward that baseline.
The power of an anchor lies in its ability to influence judgment even when it provides no useful or relevant data. Whether an initial figure is an official list price, an arbitrary opening bid in a negotiation, or a number generated completely by chance, people consistently produce final estimates that skew toward that starting value. Even when individuals recognize that the starting point is arbitrary or extreme, the mental tether remains remarkably difficult to sever completely.
The Classic Demonstrations by Tversky and Kahneman
The anchoring heuristic was formally introduced and documented in 1974 by psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. In one of their most celebrated experiments, participants watched a wheel of fortune spun before their eyes. The wheel was secretly rigged to stop only on either the number 10 or the number 65. After the wheel stopped, participants were asked whether the percentage of African nations in the United Nations was higher or lower than that number, and then asked to estimate the actual percentage.
The results demonstrated a striking disparity. Participants who saw the wheel land on 10 gave a median estimate of 25 percent, while those who saw the wheel land on 65 gave a median estimate of 45 percent. An entirely random numeral, generated by a spinning wheel in plain sight, dictated the participants' factual estimates about international geopolitics. This experiment demonstrated that anchors do not need to possess authority, relevance, or logic to exert an undeniable pull on human cognition.
