The paradox where perfect prediction ruins free choice
Imagine a supercomputer that predicts human choices with 100% accuracy. You are presented with two boxes: Box A contains $1,000, and Box B contains either $1 million or nothing. You can choose only Box B, or both boxes. If the computer predicted you would choose both, it left Box B empty. If it predicted you would choose only B, it put the million inside. What do you choose? Philosophers remain deeply divided on the rational choice.
The Setup of the Two Boxes
Newcomb's paradox presents a deceptively straightforward game involving two players: an ordinary human decision-maker and an entity known simply as the Predictor. The Predictor is introduced as having an almost uncanny or near-perfect ability to anticipate human choices, having proven this capability across thousands of previous trials. On a table sit two boxes, labeled Box A and Box B. The player is presented with a choice that appears simple on its surface but hides a fundamental fissure in rational thought.
Box A is transparent or known with certainty to contain $1,000. Box B is opaque, and its contents have already been set before the player arrives at the table: it contains either $1,000,000 or nothing at all. The player has two allowable moves: take only the opaque Box B, or take both Box A and Box B together. The rules dictate that if the Predictor foresaw that the player would take only Box B, the Predictor placed $1,000,000 inside it. If the Predictor foresaw that the player would take both boxes, the Predictor left Box B entirely empty.
The critical twist is temporal: by the time the player sits down to make the decision, the Predictor has already made its prediction and departed. The money is either physically resting inside Box B or it is not. No physical action taken at the moment of choice can alter the physical contents of the closed box. The player must decide whether to take one box or two.
The Discovery by William Newcomb and Robert Nozick
The thought experiment was conceived in 1960 by William Newcomb, a theoretical physicist at the University of California's Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Newcomb devised the scenario as an intellectual puzzle among colleagues, exploring how predictive systems interact with classical principles of rational choice. It circulated informally within mathematical and philosophical circles for nearly a decade before entering mainstream academic discourse.
