Pangolins are protected by heavy armor made of human nail material
Pangolins are the only mammals covered in large, overlapping protective scales. These tough armor plates make up as much as 20 percent of the animal's total body weight. Despite looking like reptile skin or pinecone scales, pangolin armor is made entirely of keratin—the exact same protein that forms human fingernails, rhino horns, and hair. When threatened, they roll into an impenetrable ball.
The Anatomy of Keratin Armor
Pangolins are the only known mammals covered in large, overlapping keratin scales, giving them an appearance reminiscent of a pinecone or an artichoke. These scales are not modified bone or reptilian scutes; rather, they are composed of keratin, the same structural fibrous protein that makes up human fingernails, mammalian hair, animal claws, and rhinoceros horns. Emerging from thick underlying skin, the scales grow continuously throughout the animal's life and are filed down naturally as the pangolin burrows, climbs, and brushes against abrasive surfaces.
The armor forms an exceptionally heavy defensive suit, accounting for a significant portion of a pangolin's overall body mass—often up to twenty percent. Individual scales are soft and pliable on newborn pangolins, but they harden rapidly within days of birth. Arranged in a precise, imbricated pattern, the plates cover almost the entire body, excluding the underside of the belly, the inner surfaces of the limbs, the snout, and the sides of the face. When resting or moving, these plates slide smoothly over one another, allowing the animal full flexibility without exposing unprotected gaps.
The Mechanics of Self-Defense
The word pangolin originates from the Malay word pengguling, which translates roughly to 'one who rolls up.' When confronted by predators such as lions, leopards, or hyenas, a pangolin instinctively curls into a tight, nearly impregnable sphere. It tucks its vulnerable head beneath its forelegs and wraps its muscular tail around the body, completely shielding its soft, unscaled underbelly. The exposed exterior presents a wall of sharp-edged, rigid plates that confound the biting and clawing capabilities of most apex predators.
