Leafcutter ants do not eat leaves, they use them to farm fungus
Leafcutter ants carry large pieces of foliage back to their underground nests, but they do not consume them. Instead, they chew the leaves into a pulp and use them to cultivate a specialized fungus. The ants feed exclusively on this fungus, maintaining vast underground farms that support millions of colony members.
The Illusion of Herbivory
Observing a column of leafcutter ants in a tropical forest gives the distinct impression of voracious herbivores at work. Thousands of workers march in steady lines across the forest floor, each carrying a freshly snipped piece of foliage held overhead like a green sail. Whole trees can be stripped bare of their leaves overnight, leading early naturalists to assume that these insects were consuming plant matter in staggering quantities. In reality, leafcutter ants cannot directly digest the tough cellulose and chemical defenses present in the leaves they harvest.
The harvested vegetation serves an entirely different purpose: it is raw fuel for an underground agricultural enterprise. Leafcutter ants, comprising species within the genera Atta and Acromyrmex, are obligate farmers. They transport the foliage into specialized subterranean chambers where it is processed and fed to a specific cultivar of fungus, primarily belonging to the family Lepiotaceae. The ants feed upon the fungus, establishing an evolutionary partnership that has persisted for tens of millions of years.
Processing the Harvest and Cultivating the Crop
Once leaf fragments arrive inside the nest, an intricate processing assembly line begins. Larger foraging ants pass the leaf fragments to smaller indoor workers who scrape off waxy coatings, clean off foreign microbes, and cut the leaves into minute segments. Even smaller workers then chew these fragments into a moist, spongy pulp. The ants add drops of their own enzymatic fecal fluid to the mixture, which helps break down plant compounds and primes the material for fungal colonization.
The prepared leaf pulp is carefully incorporated into the existing fungal matrix, and the ants transplant strands of fungal mycelium onto the fresh substrate. As the fungus digests the plant material, it produces specialized swollen hyphal tips called gongylidia. These nutrient-dense clusters are rich in lipids and carbohydrates, serving as the primary food source for the queen, the developing larvae, and the workers who tend the garden.
