Bullhorn acacia trees hire aggressive ants to fight off herbivores
The bullhorn acacia tree has a mutualistic relationship with pseudomyrmecine ants. The tree provides the ants with hollow thorns for shelter and specialized nectar and protein-rich food bodies. In return, the ants vigorously defend the tree, attacking any herbivores that attempt to feed on it and clearing competing vegetation from around its base.
The Anatomy of a Swollen-Thorn Tree
In the tropical dry forests and lowland habitats of Central America and southern Mexico, the bullhorn acacia stands out because of its distinctive armature. Known botanically as Acacia cornigera, the small tree produces pairs of large, hollow spines that protrude along its branches. These modified structures flare outward and taper to sharp points, closely resembling the horns of a bull or ox. While these thorns appear formidable on their own, their primary defensive purpose is structural rather than purely mechanical.
Instead of maintaining solid wood inside the thorns, the bullhorn acacia produces enlarged, hollow interiors lined with soft pith that can be excavated easily. These swollen structures, known to botanists as domatia, serve as readymade living quarters for specialized colonies of pseudomyrmecine ants. Rather than merely deterring large browsers through physical prickles, the tree uses these hollow chambers to house an aggressive, mobile standing army capable of patrolling every branch, stem, and leaflet.
Nutritional Rewards: Nectar and Beltian Bodies
A secure shelter alone is rarely sufficient to retain a permanent ant colony, so the bullhorn acacia operates a specialized internal food production system. Along the main stems and petioles of its compound leaves, the tree features extrafloral nectaries. These glandular structures secrete a steady supply of carbohydrate-rich nectar, ensuring that worker ants do not need to forage far from the tree canopy to meet their baseline energy requirements.
To provide the colony with essential proteins and lipids, the acacia manufactures another specialized structure found almost exclusively in this mutualism: Beltian bodies. These tiny, nutrient-dense nodules sprout from the tips of newly developing pinnules on young leaves. Worker ants harvest the Beltian bodies continuously and carry them directly into the hollow thorns to feed growing larvae and the queen, creating a fully self-contained nutritional economy funded entirely by the host plant.
