The masseter muscle, located in your cheek, is the strongest muscle in the human body relative to its size. When you bite down, it can exert a force of up to 200 pounds (90 kilograms) on your molars. This incredible strength is due to the muscle's thick fiber layout and its highly efficient leverage across the jawbone.
The Architecture of the Cheek Muscle
The masseter is a thick, rectangular muscle located on both sides of the face, forming the primary muscular structure of the cheek. It originates along the inferior border and medial surface of the zygomatic arch—commonly known as the cheekbone—and extends downward to attach across the lateral surface of the ramus and angle of the mandible, or lower jaw. This direct bridge between the skull and the jawbone positions the muscle to act directly on the skeleton with minimal lost energy.
Structurally, the masseter is organized into distinct layers of muscle fibers. The superficial layer arises from the anterior two-thirds of the zygomatic arch and runs downward and backward at an angle, while the deeper layer originates from the posterior portion of the arch and descends almost vertically. This layered, slightly crossing arrangement allows the masseter to stabilize the jaw while generating intense upward pulling force, ensuring that the lower jaw closes flush and securely against the upper maxilla.
The Chewing Muscle Group
While the masseter is the most visible driver of bite force, it operates as part of a specialized functional group known as the primary muscles of mastication. This group includes four pairs of muscles: the masseter, the temporalis, the medial pterygoid, and the lateral pterygoid. Each muscle occupies a distinct anatomical position around the jaw and performs specialized movements that make chewing, grinding, and biting possible.
Within this team, the masseter and the medial pterygoid work together like an anatomical sling that cradles the angle of the mandible, pulling the jaw upward with exceptional power. Meanwhile, the broad, fan-shaped temporalis muscle on the side of the skull assists in snapping the jaw shut and retracting it backward, and the lateral pterygoid controls forward protrusion and side-to-side grinding motions. The masseter's specific role is to deliver the crushing force required to pulverize hard or fibrous foods.
