Why you start shivering when you are sleep-deprived
If you have ever felt chilly or started shivering after pulling an all-nighter, your brain is to blame. Sleep deprivation disrupts the hypothalamus, the brain region responsible for regulating your core body temperature. Naturally, your body temperature drops to its lowest point during early morning sleep. Without rest, your brain struggles to keep you warm, triggering shivering to generate heat.
The Brain's Central Thermostat
Deep within the ventral part of the diencephalon lies the hypothalamus, a small but essential structure that links the nervous system to the endocrine system. Despite making up only a small fraction of the human brain's total volume, the hypothalamus serves as the primary control center for homeostasis—the maintenance of a stable internal environment. Among its most critical responsibilities is thermoregulation, the process by which the body maintains its core temperature within a tightly controlled, optimal range.
To regulate temperature, the hypothalamus integrates sensory data from both peripheral thermoreceptors in the skin and central thermoreceptors within the core and the brain itself. Regions such as the preoptic area of the hypothalamus compare these inputs against an internal baseline. When the brain detects a deviation from this target, it coordinates physiological responses through the autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine signaling to either conserve, dissipate, or generate heat.
Circadian Rhythms and Core Temperature
Core body temperature is not completely static throughout the day; it follows a predictable 24-hour cycle governed by circadian rhythms. These rhythms are coordinated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus, a specialized cluster of neurons located directly within the anterior hypothalamus. Under normal conditions, core temperature peaks in the late afternoon and early evening, then begins a gradual decline as the body prepares for rest.
During natural sleep, core body temperature reaches its lowest point, known as the temperature nadir, typically during the early morning hours before waking. This nocturnal temperature drop reduces metabolic energy expenditure and facilitates restorative processes. The drop is largely driven by vasodilation of peripheral blood vessels in the extremities, allowing heat to radiate away from the body core as sleep progresses.
