Frogs throw up their entire stomach to clean off bad food
When a frog swallows something toxic, sharp, or unpalatable, it cannot simply throw up like a human. Instead, it performs a process called stomach eversion: it regurgitates its entire stomach out of its mouth. Hanging outside its body, the frog uses its right front foot to wipe away any leftover bad food or debris. Once clean, the frog swallows its own stomach back into place, undamaged.
The Mechanics of Gastric Eversion
Most vertebrates have a muscular reflex that forces undesirable stomach contents back up through the esophagus and out the mouth. In mammals, this vomiting process relies on coordinated contractions of the abdominal muscles, diaphragm, and stomach wall to expel liquids and semi-solid food. Frogs, however, lack the anatomical setup and diaphragm-driven pressure systems required to produce a standard mammalian vomit. When an anuran ingests something dangerous, it employs a far more drastic physical maneuver known as gastric or stomach eversion.
During stomach eversion, the frog relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and contracts its body walls to turn the entire stomach inside out. The organ is propelled upward through the esophagus and pushed completely out of the oral cavity, dangling outside the mouth. This exposes the internal lining of the stomach directly to the outside air, immediately halting the absorption of any harmful substances and freeing the digestive tract of trapped, indigestible material.
Anatomical Constraints and Feeding Habits
To understand why frogs rely on stomach eversion, it helps to examine how they eat in the first place. Frogs are opportunistic predators that largely swallow their prey whole. Many species possess wide mouths, specialized sticky tongues anchored at the front of the jaw, and small maxillary or vomerine teeth designed solely to hold prey in place rather than chew it. When swallowing, frogs frequently retract their eyeballs down through openings in the skull to help push food down the gullet.
Because frogs do not chew or mechanically break down their meals before swallowing, they frequently ingest challenging materials. Live prey may fight back, have sharp exoskeletons or spines, or release noxious defensive chemicals once inside the frog. Lacking teeth to grind down these items or a complex multi-chambered digestive system to isolate them, the frog's primary defense against acute poisoning or internal physical damage is the rapid, total evacuation of the entire organ.
