The blue whale is the largest animal ever known to have lived, so its anatomy is naturally gargantuan. A blue whale's tongue alone is so massive that it can weigh up to 3 short tons (about 2.7 metric tons). This is roughly equivalent to the weight of an entire adult female Asian elephant. Despite its size, the tongue is mostly used to push massive amounts of water out of its mouth.

The blue whale holds the title of the largest animal known to have ever lived, surpassing even the most colossal sauropod dinosaurs in overall mass. Reaching lengths of nearly thirty meters and body masses that can exceed one hundred and fifty metric tons, every single anatomical component of the species is scaled to extraordinary dimensions. Its streamlined body is engineered to glide through pelagic waters, yet its front half is dominated by an enormous skull and an elastic oral cavity designed for mass water ingestion.
Within this cavernous mouth sits a tongue of unbelievable proportions. In a mature adult, the tongue alone can weigh roughly 2.7 metric tons, or about 3 short tons. While land mammals use their tongues primarily for taste, manipulation of food boluses, and vocalization, the blue whale's tongue functions as a critical mechanical piston in one of nature's most extreme feeding strategies.
Anatomy of an Expandable Oral Piston
The blue whale belongs to the rorqual family, a group of baleen whales characterized by distinct longitudinal pleats or grooves running along the throat from the chin down to the navel. These ventral grooves allow the throat and floor of the mouth to stretch like a massive accordion. The tongue itself is not merely a static slab of tissue; it is a highly specialized, muscular organ embedded in an elastic sheath that can shift and deform under tremendous fluid pressures.
During a feeding maneuver, the tongue and the floor of the mouth are subjected to forces unlike anything seen in terrestrial biology. Rather than remaining rigid, the tongue can invert or retract into an elastic pouch within the whale's ventral cavity. This flexibility allows the oral cavity to expand to many times its resting volume, accommodating an influx of water that can equal or exceed the whale's own dry body weight in a single gulp.
