The secret behind a hippo's pink sweat
Hippopotamuses don't actually sweat. Instead, they secrete a thick, reddish-pink fluid from their skin. Often called blood sweat, this liquid is actually a natural skin medicine. It contains red and orange pigments that absorb ultraviolet light, acting as a powerful sunscreen. It also serves as a potent moisturizer and antibiotic, keeping the hippo's skin healthy in muddy, bacteria-filled waters.
The Illusion of Blood Sweat
For centuries, observers in sub-Saharan Africa noted that hippopotamuses basking on riverbanks appeared to weep droplets of blood. When exposed to bright sunlight, a sheen of deep crimson fluid gathers across their necks, flanks, and ears. This striking display gave rise to the enduring myth that hippos possess sweat glands that literally weep blood when under stress or heat.
In biological terms, the animal is neither bleeding nor sweating. True hippos lack both sebaceous glands and true sweat glands found in many other mammals. Instead, specialized subdermal glands produce a thick, oily mucous secretion that begins completely clear. Within minutes of touching the air and interacting with sunlight, chemical changes turn the fluid bright orange and then an intense reddish-pink, before it gradually polymerizes into a dull, brownish crust.
The Chemistry of Hippo Pigments
The distinct coloration comes from two non-protein organic pigments unique to hippos: a red compound known as hipposudoric acid and an orange counterpart called norhipposudoric acid. Both compounds belong to a class of complex aromatic molecules that possess unusual chemical stability and high acidity.
As the clear precursor fluid emerges from the pores, exposure to atmospheric oxygen triggers oxidation. The molecules rapidly form polymers, creating an elastic, resin-like film that clings tightly to the hippo's bare skin. This film does not readily dissolve in water, ensuring that it remains active even as the animal repeatedly enters and exits muddy rivers throughout the day.
