The Turkish Art of Painting on Water
Ebru, the traditional Turkish art of paper marbling, involves painting directly on the surface of water. Artists thicken water using a natural gum called tragacanth, then sprinkle oil-resistant natural pigments onto the liquid surface. Using delicate combs, brushes, and needles, they swirl the floating colors into breathtaking, organic patterns or detailed flowers. Finally, a sheet of paper is gently laid on the water, instantly capturing and freezing the fluid masterpiece forever.
The Fluid Chemistry of the Sizing Bath
At the core of paper marbling lies a delicate balance of fluid mechanics and surface tension. Under normal circumstances, mineral pigments dropped into water will either sink to the bottom or dissolve and disperse into an indistinct wash. To prevent this, marblers transform the water into a viscous liquid base known as the size. Traditionally in Turkish ebru, the size is prepared by dissolving natural gum tragacanth—an extract derived from the thorny Astragalus shrub—or carrageenan extracted from red seaweed into water. This thickens the bath, creating a dense, gel-like surface capable of physically supporting heavy pigment particles without allowing them to submerge.
Equally crucial is the preparation of the pigments themselves. Natural earth colors and ground minerals are mixed with water and ox gall, a surfactant derived from bovine bile. The bile contains bile salts that dramatically reduce the surface tension of the paint droplets. When a drop of ox-gall-treated paint touches the surface of the size, the sudden reduction in localized surface tension causes the droplet to violently expand outwards into a stable, floating circular disc rather than balling up or sinking.
The interaction between successive drops allows marblers to build intricate compositions. When a second color containing ox gall is dropped into the center of a previously laid circle, it pushes the first color outward into a concentric ring without blending into it. By carefully calibrating the amount of ox gall and pigment density in each batch of color, artists control which pigments expand aggressively and which remain tightly contained, establishing an architecture of separate, floating color zones.
